Did you know? Anne Lowe was a talented and prolific fashion designer, best known for creating Jacqueline Kennedy’s iconic wedding dress. Despite her remarkable talent and high-profile clientele, Lowe was often overlooked and referred to simply as a “black designer” during her time. In fact, only one article in the Washington Post mentioned her by name, highlighting the unfortunate reality of racial bias in the fashion industry.
Despite the challenges she faced, Lowe’s talent shone through. She even had the opportunity to share her story on the Mike Douglas Show. Born in 1898 and passing away in 1981, Lowe’s journey was one of passion and dedication. Growing up surrounded by seamstresses – her grandmother and mother – she began sewing at a young age, making her own play dresses by eight and mastering pattern-making by ten.
